Gemstone Hinoki Cypress
Gemstone Hinoki Cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Gemstone')
‘Gemstone’ is a true miniature cultivar of Hinoki Cypress developed by Iseli Nursery, and it's about as compact as conifers get. With its tight sprays of deep green foliage and naturally dense, globe-shaped growth, this selection is perfect for growers who want bonsai-level texture in a tree that barely knows how to get leggy.
As a Bonsai:
Gemstone is one of the best Hinoki cultivars for bonsai thanks to its tiny scale-like foliage, slow growth, and natural compactness. It takes pruning well, though wiring must be done gently, as Hinoki branches can be brittle. Perfect for shohin or small upright styles where you want a refined look without a ton of maintenance.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
