Tansu Japanese Cedar
Tansu Japanese Cedar (Cryptomeria japonica 'Tansu')
‘Tansu’ is a dwarf selection of Japanese cedar developed by Iseli Nursery, known for its tight, globe-like growth, fine, feathery foliage, and miniature scale. Unlike its towering wild cousins, this compact cultivar stays charmingly small, making it an excellent candidate for bonsai, container growing, or refined landscape accents.
As a Bonsai:
Tansu is one of the best Cryptomeria varieties for bonsai due to its dense foliage, slow growth, and natural branching structure. It responds well to pruning, but wiring should be done with care—branches can be a bit brittle when dry. Over time, it forms a textured trunk and lush green pads that look great in upright or informal styles.
📢 This is a cold-hardy species—it requires a winter dormancy and should be kept outside year-round. In locations with extreme cold, we recommend placing it on the ground, mulching around the pot, and protecting it from wind.
